Chief White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci tried to backpedal like it was his job on Monday after receiving backlash for saying that it was “too soon to tell” if American families would be able to gather for Christmas in two months.

Fauci made his initial comments about Christmas during an interview on “Face The Nation” on Sunday.

While appearing on CNN today, Fauci claimed that his comments made just the day before were “taken completely out of context” and “misinterpreted.”

“You know, I also said something over the weekend that was taken completely out of context,” Fauci stated. “I was asked what could we predict for this winter, for like December and Christmas.”

“I mean, I say you hold off on that. I said we don’t know because we’ve seen slopes that went down and then came back up,” he added. “The best way to assure that we’ll be in good shape as we get into the winter would be to get more and more people vaccinated. That was misinterpreted as my saying we can’t spend Christmas with our families, which was absolutely not the case.”

Fauci went on to say that he’ll be spending Christmas with his family and that those who are vaccinated against COVID-19 should do the same.

“I will be spending Christmas with my family,” Fauci concluded, according to The New York Post. “I encourage people, particularly the vaccinated people who are protected, to have a good, normal Christmas with your family. But … the way all of the other disinformation goes around, you say something talking about a landmark of a time, and it gets misinterpreted that I’m saying you can’t spend family Christmas time, which is nonsense. You can.”

This came just one day after Fauci was asked by CBS News host Margaret Brennan whether “we can gather for Christmas, or it’s just too soon to tell.”

“You know Margaret; it’s just too soon to tell,” Fauci responded. “We’ve just got to concentrate on continuing to get those numbers down and not try to jump ahead by weeks or months and say what we’re going to do at a particular time. Let’s focus like a laser on continuing to get those cases down. And we can do it by people getting vaccinated and also, in the situation where boosters are appropriate, to get people boosted.”

The backlash against Fauci for his Christmas comments was swift.

Fauci has contradicted himself so many times during this pandemic that it’s impossible to trust anything he says anymore. He can go back and forth on playing “Scrooge” all he wants to, but we won’t be canceling our Christmas celebrations, regardless of what he says.
