The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has cleared only 45% of U.S. commercial airplanes to perform low-visibility landings at airports with 5G C-band services installed. Despite 5G installation being planned for years, the FAA is only now learning that the new high-speed internet negatively impacts a variety of airplane instruments.
Fifty-five percent of U.S. commercial airplanes are no longer allowed to perform low-visibility landings because 5G interferes with sensitive instruments like altimeters that are crucial for low-visibility operations.
Understand that this is a story of gross government inaction and failure. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and FAA were crucial in installing 5G. However, they had no understanding, until recently, that the majority of U.S. planes cannot properly function when exposed to the new frequency.
The FCC and FAA only became aware of the issue from U.S. passenger and cargo airlines that have made repeated complaints to the government agencies. Airlines for America, a trade group that represents American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and FedEx made the following statement:
“Even with the approvals granted by the FAA today, U.S. airlines will not be able to operate the vast majority of passenger and cargo flights due to the FAA’s 5G-related flight restrictions unless action is taken prior to the planned Jan. 19 rollout.”
The issue has become so bad that the FAA is now released 1,500 notices warning passengers flying in poor weather conditions to make sure their flight isn’t coming from an airline on the 5G C-Band spectrum:
“Passengers should check with their airlines if weather is forecast at a destination where 5G interference is possible.”
Groups representing cargo planes’ pilots claim that this new 5G C-Band will exacerbate the ongoing supply chain crisis. The North America branch of Airports Council International has urged to delay 5G implementation to avoid disrupting the entire U.S. air transportation system.
To temporarily fix the issue, AT&T and Verizon have agreed to buffer zones around 50 airports to reduce interference with airplane instruments.
AT&T and Verizon were the two companies to win the $81.2 billion government contract to secure the 5G C-Band from the FCC. Both companies have agreed to delay implementing 5G around airports for two weeks to ensure the safety of flights.
It is incredible how inept our federal government bureaucracy is at handling any issue. You would think that the FCC and FAA, which contracted and implemented 5G C-Band services, would have understood the implications on air travel brought about by the new technology.
But, the FCC and FAA have only learned that 5G interferes with sensitive airplane instruments that are crucial for safe flights while 5G is being implemented.
