New York City’s Emergency Management Department just released a 90 second clip that informed New Yorkers what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. The timing of this video seems odd, but it is likely in response to a Russian state media claim that they could wipe out the US East Coast.
New Yorkers are already dealing with an immense amount of stress coming from public officials who spread fear about COVID and monkeypox, all while do nothing to combat rising crime rates. Now, New Yorkers have a new threat to worry about: nuclear war.
This recently released public service announcement may do more harm than good, seeing how the likelihood of such a catastrophic event occurring in NYC is very low. Thus, the PSA may just inflame the fears of people who are already facing a lot of pressure and stress from Democratic officials.
NYC Emergency Management’s PSA does nothing to ameliorate these fears as it is extremely vague. Here is the opening line from the PSA:
“So there has been a nuclear attack. Don’t ask me how or why, just know that the big one has hit. OK? So, what do we do? There are three important tips I want you to remember.”
For a public service announcement that discusses what to do in the event of a nuclear attack, citing the possible causes of the attack aren’t necessary. However, NYC Emergency Management officials have done little to explain why they felt a need to release such a video. New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol gave a partial explanation in a press release for the PSA:
“As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is important that New Yorkers know we are preparing for any imminent threats and are providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed.”
Deputy Commissioner of Emergency Management Christina Farrell had this to say when speaking to 1010WINS:
“We know that this material is very serious and can be scary, frankly, but it is very important. There is no specific threat at this time.”
New York officials refuse to tell citizens what exactly spurred them to release this PSA, but the evolving “landscape” they refer to is likely Putin’s increased aggression.
A member of Putin’s parliament Alexei Zhuravlev made aggressive claims in response to a recent CBS News piece that estimated a nuclear attack from Russia would result in a mushroom cloud that could dwarf the Empire State building and destroy much of Manhattan. Zhuravlev asserts that these estimates are far too conservative and that the devastation will be far worse:
“Guys, you’re so funny. What methods are they even using. I will competently tell you, that to destroy the entire East Coast of the US, two Sarmat missiles are necessary and two missiles for the West Coast. Four missiles, and there will be nothing left. They think the mushroom cloud will be taller than a high rise. That mushroom cloud will be visible from Mexico.”
With top Russian officials openly discussing nuclear war with the United States, we are in a perilous state of affairs. If the Russians were ever to act with open aggression, it would be done when the United States has an incompetent leader, especially one struggling with old age and possibly dementia.
